The eastern border of the Austrian Danube corridor includes the following border crossings with Slovakia and Hungary:

Danube: Hainburg

Road: Berg, Kittsee, Nickelsdorf, Klingenbach, Deutschkreutz

Rail: Marchegg, Kittsee, Hegyeshalom, Sopron, Deutschkreutz

In 2010 the total amount of goods transported on the eastern border of the Danube corridor rose by +19.1%, compared to 2009, to 40.0 million tons.  Due to the crisis, there was a decrease in goods transported of -20.7% or 8.8 million tons between 2007 and 2009. In total, transportation of goods increased considerably by 10.6% in 2007 compared to 2006. Transport carriers here have also been affected in different ways:

  • The market share for road transport was 49.4% in 2010 and is consistent with a continual increase over the last 20 years (+37.0% in comparison to 1990). With 19.8 million tons, transportation of goods by road in 2010 exceeded that of the record year of 2007. In the crisis years of 2007-2009 there was a decrease in goods transported of -10.2% 0r 1.9 million tons.
  • The amount of goods transported by rail in 2010 was 11.9 million tons. In order to reach the level of the pre-crisis year of 2007 it was necessary to increase the level of goods transported by +22.3%. The market share for rail decreased during the crisis years and now stands at 29.9% (2010) in comparison to 36.3% in 2007.
  • With 20.7 %, the market share for the eastern corridor of the Danube in 2010 remained relatively constant in comparison to the three previous years (within a fluctuation margin of +/- 0.4 percentage points). Transportation of goods amounted to 8.3 million tons, a decrease of -4.7% from the year 2007.
