EASTERN BOUNDARY OF THE AUSTRIAN DANUBE CORRIDOR

The eastern border of the Danube corridor includes the following cross-border sections with Slovakia and Hungary:

Danube: Hainburg
Road: Berg, Kittsee, Nickelsdorf, Klingenbach, Deutschkreuz
Rail: Marchegg, Kittsee, Hegyeshalom, Sopron, Deutschkreuz

In total, the transport volume on the eastern border of the Danube corridor increased slightly (+5%) in 2006 and quicker (+14%) in 2007, whereas the individual transport modes showed different developments:

  • Road transport increased significantly by +11% in 2006, and by another +11.5% in the following year (due to the limited availability of data, some uncertainty remains regarding this figure), enhancing its market share to 42%.
  • Rail transport increased by 12% in 2006 and continued this trend in 2007, recording a growth of +11%. Thus, it regained market in the year 2007, where the modal split of rail transport was 37%.
  • After the low-water levels of 2006, waterway transport on the Danube recovered more quickly at the eastern border than at the western border of the Austrian Danube corridor. Despite a all-time record transport volume of  9.2 million tonnes (beating the record results from 2002), waterway transport on the Danube in 2007 only reached a market share of 21% and hence stayed below its market share of 2005 (about 24%).
