The western border of the Austrian Danube corridor includes the following border crossings with Germany:

Danube: Passau

Road: Suben, Neuhaus, Simbach

Rail: Passau

The total traffic volume for the three modes of transport (road, rail and inland waterway) on the western border of the Danube corridor grew to 53.4 million tons in the year 2010 (15.1% or 7.0 million tons more than in the crisis year of 2009). Due to the crisis, in 2008 and 2009 there was a drop of -20.1% or 11.7 million tons less than 2007. The years up to 2007 had seen a continual increase. The three different modes of transport have continued to develop at different rates:

  • Road transport, with an increase to 32.8 million tons of goods transported in 2010, has the largest share of the market with 61.5%. This exceeds the pre-crisis year of 2007 by 0.5%. In the crisis years of 2007-2009 there was a drop in goods transported of 20%.
  • With 29.1%, rail transport increased in 2010 by one percent more than in 2007. This corresponds to a figure of 15.5 million tons of goods transported. Due to the financial crisis, there was a sharp decline of -19.3% or 3.3 million tons in the year 2007-2009. Over the last 5 years (2006-2010), the railway has had a constant market share of around 29.0%.
  • In 2010 the inland navigation transport market on the Danube share amounted to 9.5%, which was a half percentage point lower than in the pre-crisis year of 2007. The volume of goods transported at 5.0 million tons is still below the annual figures for 2007. In the crisis years from 2007 until 2009 there was a drop in goods transported of -22.5%.
