WESTERN BOUNDARY OF THE AUSTRIAN DANUBE CORRIDOR

The western border of the Austrian Danube corridor includes the following cross-border sections with Germany:

Danube: Passau
Road: Suben, Neuhaus, Simbach
Rail: Passau

On the western border of the Danube corridor, the aggregate transport volume of the three transport modes has increased significantly in the last two years (2005: +/-0%, 2006 +5%, 2007 +9%). However, the individual transport modes still differ in their development:

  • In 2006, road transport increased by 7% and stepped up its growth to 10% in 2007. Its market share increased from 58% to about 59%.
  • Rail transport recorded a substantial increase (+14%) in 2006. In the following year, this growth decreased slightly (+5%). Compared to 2005, the transport mode was able to enhance its market share (at the expense of the Danube), and in 2007 it accounted for 30% of the overall volume.
  • In 2006, waterway transport on the Danube suffered significant losses (-19.5%) due to unfavourable weather conditions. In 2007, these losses were partly compensated for (+11%), yet transport volumes stayed clearly below the year 2005. In the period between 2005 and 2007, the market share of waterway transport on the Danube decreased from 14% to 11%.
