PORT TRANSHIPMENT – COMMODITY GROUPS

2007 was by far the best year in terms of water transhipment volumes in the Austrian Danube ports and landing stages. The breakdown by NSTR groups provides information about the types of commodities handled on the Austrian part of the Danube.

With 3.4 million tonnes ores and metal waste constitute the most important commodity group, the major part of which was bound for the voestalpine steelworks in Linz. Hence, these goods accounted for 36.1% of the overall transhipment volume in 2007.

With 2.7 million tonnes or 28.7% the group of petroleum and mineral oil products was the second most frequently transhipped commodity type at Austrian ports and landing stages. The major transhipment ports for these liquid goods transports are the tanker port in Linz, Vienna’s port of Lobau and the cargo landing stage of MOL at Korneuburg.

Next in rank is the commodity group of stones, earths and building materials (excluding transhipment of gravel from maintenance and re-naturalisation dredgings) with a share of 8.5% in total water transhipment. The major part of the overall amount of 807,000 tonnes was transhipped in the ports of Krems, Enns, and Vienna and in the private port of voestalpine in Linz.

In addition, large quantities of iron and steel (e.g. steel coils and sheet steel) were moved in Mierka Donauhafen Krems and the private port of voestalpine. In total, all Austrian ports handled more than 730,000 tonnes of goods from this commodity group (7.8% of the overall transhipment volume).

Other important commodity groups for the Austrian Danube ports included fertilisers, agricultural and forestry products (e.g. timber), foodstuffs and animal fodder (e.g. grain) and mineral fuels (e.g. coal, coke). Chemical products and vehicles, machinery and other semi-finished and finished goods achieved a transport share of 0.6% in 2007.
