According to the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine a yearly amount of over one million TEU is shipped by inland waterway transport from and to the maritime ports via the Rhine with specially built vessels being used for container transport. The latter will certainly gain in importance for Danube navigation in the future. Convoys with pushed barges and an overall slot capacity of 576 TEU are considered to be the optimum future container transport method on the Danube. Every unit of the convoy would carry 144 TEU arranged in three tiers, each tier holding 48 TEU, that is 20 containers in the width and 12 in the length. As compared, “JOWI” the biggest Rhine container vessel can hold 470 TEU.
