Inland navigation ensures minimum energy input and use of resources, thereby protecting people and the environment. Compared to road and rail transport, it requires the lowest energy input and consumption to carry one tonne of cargo over a distance of 1000 kilometres, or in other words, it covers the greatest transport distance with the same energy consumption. The average fuel consumption for inland navigation is 0.0083 litres per tonne kilometre (l/tkm) compared to 0.0292 l/tkm for road freight transport.
