Since one ship can transport high volumes in one run, inland waterway transport (IWT) offers attractive transport charges for the Austrian Economy. Especially for bulk goods like iron ore or agricultural products the transport prices per ton using Inland navigation count 25% lower than with rail and 80% lower than with truck.

The Danube offers free capacities; and sets no time restrictions. On the Danube there are no driving bans whether weekends or at night.

Around 10 million tons of goods are transported on the Austrian stretch of the Danube – without noise and congestion. This would equals to a daily 100 km long convoy of trucks transporting goods from Vienna to Linz.

One of the safest way to transport your goods and environmentally friendly:
Using the same amount of fuel a ship can to transport one ton of goods over 370 km – while a truck can transport the same amount of goods over 100 km. Danube Navigation cuts fuel consumption by 70% and the CO2-emissions by 70% as well.

The Danube offers inland waterway transport a natural transport route with low infrastructure costs and no additional land use. The infrastructure costs in road transport are double of those of IWT and six times higher in rail transport.
